Description of Cathy's Practice

Catherine McCall, author of When the Piano StopsI have practiced in the Roswell, Georgia area since 1986. My practice includes individual psychotherapy, marital therapy and family therapy. I work primarily with adults, seeing children in the context of family therapy or as part of an evaluative consultation. I also work with later-aged adolescents in individual therapy.

Clients present me with a wide range of problems including anxiety and depression, grief, life adjustment problems, relational difficulties, marital problems, corporate family stress, health and/or spiritual concerns, sex, alcohol, drugs, career issues, child-rearing, eldercare, menopause, aging. As a Certified Gottman Educator, I conduct workshops for expectant parents called "Bringing Baby Home".

What is Marriage and Family Therapy?

It is psychotherapy with individuals, couples, or families, practiced in the context of focusing on problems in relationships, including conflicts between couples, parents, and children, in-laws, friends, and business associates. Marriage and Family Therapy strengthens relationships, facilitates communication, and negotiates conflict resolution.

Throughout the life cycle of a family, issues arise which are best addressed in the context of marital and/or family therapy.

Specifically, what issues are addressed?

Why should I see a Family Therapist rather than another type of Mental Health professional?

A Marriage and Family Therapist, whether working in the office with one person, a couple, one, two, or three generations of a family, is trained to conceptualize each person's problems as part of an intimate interplay of dynamics in the family, work, and/or cultural systems of which s/he is a part. Emphasis is on the systemic dynamics of family roles, developmental patterns, and history, rather than on individual personality.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists have completed rigorous educational requirements and extensive supervised clinical practice. They are trained in both diagnosis and treatment. They observe strict ethical codes of professional conduct, and adhere to State Licensure Board requirements for Continuing Education.
